The Life and Soul

“The Life and Soul” graphic novel by Chris O’Connor and Tony Pickering is live on Crowdfundr!

Adapted from a hit theatrical play, this graphic novel delves into the complexities of mental health and human interaction within a society consumed by social media.

Diabetes: Year One (Graphic Medicine)

Extracts from “Diabetes: Year One” a collection of graphic poems that covers my first year (and a bit) after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and the experience of becoming a patient, and accepting, resisting and understanding what that means to me.

It’s a comic that is unashamedly graphic and poetic. A collection of moments and events that deal not only with the diagnosis and symptoms of chronic illness, but also with the nitty-gritty of living with something, that in some way, is always there. It’s my experience, and my voice, but I hope it also speaks to others in and out of the same boat.

Mental Goblins (Graphic Medicine)

“If you’ve ever been sitting there minding your own business when suddenly you’ve found yourself under attack from hundreds of goblins, then this the book for you.

A personal reflection on learning to live with anxieties, traumas and other things that like to attack our brains.”

"Random Fluctuations" (Graphic Medicine)

This comic poem was an offshoot from “Diabetes: Year One” which I’ve dusted off and extended. The idea was to use the format of the diary I was given to record my blood sugars & carbs when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, as a way to consider the ways the diary seemed to encapsulate and define my experience of type 1 diabetes.

The images are provoked by inserting the text and psychology into this format - a form that is not unfamiliar, but does jar with the everyday - both of drawing and reading.

Anyway I took the format as a starting point, and then elaborated on that with the text of the poem.
